That Darn Calf

That Darn Calf
Friends, the term "golden calf" is widely known, and I think, too, that most understand its meaning. Or do we?
In the first reading today (Exodus 32:7-14), we are told that the people whom Moses guided out of Egypt, that is, slavery, got tired of waiting on God and turned their attention to what THEY created, a calf made with materials whose properties had a high melting point. Maybe they thought if it were made of molten materials, it would last forever.

A calf in biblical parlance is a symbol of idolatry, apostasy, and rejection of God. We might then, if we desire to not reject God, ask to what extent God should be involved in our lives.
God was well aware of the Israelites turning away from Him and informed Moses that the people were "depraved", morally corrupt.

Consider how much this reflects on our world. Then, we should consider if we have any molten or golden calves in our personal lives. Have we turned our attention from Him? Do we give him a few seconds each day? Where have we given up waiting on God? Where have we determined that God cannot play a role? Where do we feel that we are dealing with trivial things such that they are too small to bring to God?

I think one of my issues, and it might be yours, is underestimating God subconsciously. We might think God is too busy for little 'ol me. We might think God is not interested in our work or our leisurely activities. Rubbish. The Israelites got tired of waiting and thought God had forgotten about them. Oh, how they underestimated God and were ungrateful for being freed from bondage. This is a great reading to prepare us for Holy Week.
At the core of our being, there must be an unshakeable confidence that God will provide for us in His way, not our ways.
